Each composition is painted with sumi ink and gouache on rice paper, called shuen. The abstracted views of landscape allude to impermanence and infinite space, as the great is revealed in the small. These intimate ink brush paintings are done as a daily painting practice. Originally these compositions were assembled onto a cash register receipt roll to form a scroll. Balance between the dualistic properties of the physical world such as light and dark, void and form, order and disorder are explored with the simplest of materials in ink brush painting. The flow of water, the density of ink and fragility of rice paper are an entrance into the abstract language of painting and function as a visual metaphor for the idea of being and non being.
